Division of Chemistry : In 1928, the federal government decided to establish National Research Laboratories in Ottawa, for the work of the NRC - specifically a chemistry, physics, biology and engineering lab. In 1929, Dr GS Whitby was appointed Director of the Division of Chemistry. By 1930, work had begun in the not-yet-completed laboratory, with research into asbestos, plastic magnesia, agricultural wastes, maple products, honey and many other products going forward - some of these projects had been started in other laboratories.
With the end of the war, the branch, based on its increased size and the re-organization required by the movement to a post-war society, was divided into two branches - Fundamental Chemistry and Applied Chemistry. In 1947, the division was re-organized into Pure and Applied Chemistry, and then by 1950, Pure Chemistry and Applied Chemistry were separate divisions.Additional information:Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the series.Accruals:Further accruals are expected.Related material:Related records may also be found in the following private papers: A Cambron fonds (MG30 B162), RN Jones (MG31 J25), DF Stedman (MG31 J26), RF Legget (MG31 J44).Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG77-B-2 -
