Date:1916-1989Reference:R1207-32-1-E, RG77-FType of material:Textual materialFound in:Archives / Collections and FondsItem ID number:134927Date(s):1916-1989Bilingual equivalent:Place of creation:CanadaExtent:3.6 m of textual recordsLanguage of material:EnglishScope and content:Series consists of minutes from the meetings of the National Research Council from December 1916 (the first meeting) until June 1989. The minutes are bound in separate volumes with appendices, which include the documents tabled for discussion. Within the structure of the organization, the governing Council assumed responsibility for ensuring that the work of the National Research Council fulfilled the department's mandate. Initially, the Council consisted of a President, Secretary-Treasurer and up to eleven members appointed by Governor-in-Council. The President was the only salaried Council member, with others nominated from various sectors of industry, business, universities, labour and government.
Over the years, the structure of the Council changed, to reflect changes in the organization. In 1924, the number of Council members was increased to fifteen. Council membership continued to grow during the second world war, as the work and staff of the NRC grew and changed. By the end of the 1960s, many factors, including the increase in research domains and the re-distribution of government science and technology responsibilities, a délégué-général with responsibility for planning, a council secretary, an information and four Vice-Presidents were added. In the 1980s, council membership became twenty-one, although not all positions were always occupied. By 1997, the governing Council consisted of up to twenty-one members, with the President, Vice-President of Research, Vice-President of Technology and Industry Support, Vice-President Administration and the Secretary-General.Additional information:Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the series.Accruals:Further accruals are expected.Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG77-F -
