This system featured a sequential numbering system. The files in this sub-series considerably pre- and post-date the actual administrative life of the agency (1906-1922), since the registry incorporated files from former branches and was maintained by successor branches.
This sub-series includes files created prior to 1906 by the Timber, Mines, Grazing and Irrigation Branch. The Mines Branch was created to carry-out the mining-related activities from the Timber, Mines, Grazing and Irrigation Branch of the Department of the Interior. Active files maintained by the Timber, Mines, Grazing and Irrigation Branch were incorporated into the central registry system of the Mines Branch; they were given a new file cover and number.
This sub-series includes files dated after 1922. In 1922, the Mining Lands and Yukon Branch was dissolved and its functions were transferred to the newly created Mining Lands Branch and the Northwest Territories and Yukon Branch. Many of the active records from the Mining Lands and Yukon Branch registry were incorporated into registries created by the new Branches, Please see: Mining Lands Branch series (archival reference no. R216-148-X-E), the Northwest Territories and Yukon Branch series (archival reference no. R216-114-4-E), and the Mining Lands Section sub-series (archival reference no. R216-151-X-E). In particular, files created by the Mining Lands and Yukon Branch that were not related to the management of resources were largely incorporated into the registry of the Northwest Territories and Yukon Branch series.
Although some active files were incorporated into new registry systems, the Mining Lands and Yukon Branch registry continued to be used for many years after 1922 by various areas of the Department of the Interior and its successors after the Department was dissolved in 1936. In some cases, successor branches actually created new files after 1922 as part of this series to run concurrently with newer registries.
Records found in this sub-series relate to activities initially mandated to the Mining Lands and Yukon Branch and later transferred to various areas of the Department. These activities include:
- responsibility for all mining lands in the Prairie provinces, the Northwest Territories, the Yukon Territory, and the Railway Belt in B.C
- maintainance of the township registers for mining claims in the areas under its control
- administration of timber rights in the Yukon, petroleum leases, water rights, dredging permits, coal leases, quarrying rights in Rocky Mountain Park, hydraulic mining leases, royalties on gold mined in the Yukon Territory, and the tar sands in northern Alberta
In 1930, when responsibility for natural resources was transferred to Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, most files that were then currently active dealing with natural resources in those provinces were removed from this registry system and subsequently transferred under the terms of the National Resources Act to the appropriate prairie province. Files relating to the West, however, which were not current in 1930 or which the Department felt were still useful for reference purposes to determine policy and procedural precedents or to settle any legal claims were maintained as part of this series.
The majority of the files in this sub-series relate to mining activity in the North between 1906 and 1930, despite the inclusive dates of the series and the wider administrative mandate of the Branch itself for the West as well as the North. Most of the files concern individual miners' or companies' mineral claims, although some general correspondence has also survived, including that relating to the Gold Commissioner of the Yukon and that of the Mining Lands and Yukon Branch with other federal agencies., The sub-series also contains survey plans of hydraulic concessions in the Klondike. The maps were prepared by dominion land surveyors for the Timber, Mines, Grazing and Irrigation Branch of the Dept. of the Interior.Additional name(s):Additional information:General note:Detailed plans were required as part of the leasing process in order to conduct hydraulic mining operations.Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the sub-series.Custodial history:RG85M 90118, transferred to Visual and Sound Archives from the Government Archives Division, RG85, Series A-1-a, 88-89/068.Cartographic math data:Scales differ.Associated material note:The survey notes that originally accompanied the maps are located in RG85M, Vol. 2159.Accruals:No further accruals are expected.Subject heading:Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG85-A-1-a
