Series consists of engineering reports and central registry files created and/or maintained by the Water Resources Branch (EMR) and its predecessors, namely the Dominion Water Power Branch (Interior), the Dominion Water Power and Reclamation Service (Interior), and the Dominion Water and Power Bureau (Mines and Resources).

There are also three reports created by the Inland Waters Branch or its predecessors which relate to the Interdepartmental Committee on Territorial Waters (1937), St. Lawrence River investigations (1954), and the Canada Centre for Inland Waters (1968).

Canada. Inland Waters Branch : In 1966-67 a new Department of Energy, Mines and Resources was created by the Government Organization Act (14-15 Eliz. II, c. 25). It was organized as four "groups" - Mines and Geoscience, Mineral Development, Energy Development, and Water. The Water Group (A.T. Davidson, Assistant Deputy Minister) took control of the Inland Waters Branch. This latter branch, which resulted from the integration of the Water Research (of Mines and Technical Surveys) and Water Resources (of Northern Affairs and National Resources) Branches, coordinated all inland water survey and research work within one branch.

From the Water Research Branch came the Great Lakes and Water Quality Division, which retained their names in the changeover, and the Hydrology Division which formed the nucleus for the new and larger Hydrologic Sciences Division. From the Water Resources Branch came the Canadian Hydrometric Survey which was renamed the Water Survey of Canada, and the Planning, Great Lakes and Research Divisions which combined to form the Engineering Division (Energy, Mines and Resources, Annual Report, 1966-1967, 1967-1968). In 1972 the Inland Waters Branch amalgamated with the Planning and Operations Branch to form the Inland Waters Directorate in the new Department of the Environment. RG89 General Inventory
