Series consists of records created and maintained by the Director of Naval Intelligence. The series is divided into sub-series relating to: instructions, route and sailing orders issued to masters of merchant vessels during the First World War (Vols. 3779- 3788); cards recording the movements of merchant vessels employed by the Allies during the Second World War (Vols. 6982-6983); the visit of the German cruiser KARLSRUHE to Vancouver in March 1935 (Vol. 3788); subject files related to organization and administration, monitoring of arrivals and sailings, communications, wireless, German and Japanese pre-war and wartime marine operations and activities, and post reports and censorship (Reels C-5848 to C-5869).

Canada. Royal Canadian Navy. Director of Intelligence : The Director of Naval Intelligence (DNI) derived his authority from the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS). This post was filled by an officer of the Royal Navy on loan to the Royal Canadian Navy. From his headquarters in the Ottawa Intelligence Area, the DNI supervised Naval Control Service Officers and civilian customs officials engaged in the control and reporting of Commonwealth and enemy shipping as part of the Admiralty world-wide intelligence system. In 1939 the DNI became the Director of Naval Intelligence and Trade and in 1942 separate divisions were established for Intelligence and Trade. These divisions were recombined in 1945.
