For every Supreme Court case between 1876 and 1988, the docket books provide a chronological sketch of proceedings, from the initial motion for appeal to the notification of the judgement and the determination of costs. The indices to the dockets are arranged in rough alphabetical order, usually by the name of the appellant.

Headings for each case indicate the names of the parties involved, their solicitors (the individuals and most often the firms), and the name of the lower court which rendered the decision under appeal. Each page also has a large section labelled "Proceedings" which shows the dates on which various actions took place. Information in this area often includes a basic indication of whether the judgements were rendered in favour of the appellants or respondents, the fees charged for the proceedings, and the publication reference for the cases which were reported in the Supreme Court Reports.

On their own, the docket books concisely map the progress of cases through the Supreme Court. They may also be used as a finding aid to the case files which provide a detailed breakdown of cases plus the judgement of the justices. However, the dockets provide no additional information on the nature of the case under appeal. Dockets 1 through 9 are held at LAC, covering the period up to 1927, while the Supreme Court holds the later volumes.
