Series consists of the files of Hamilton Southam, both as Coordinator of the National Centre for the Performing Arts and as Director General of the National Art Centre, 1964-1977. The series also contains the files of Donald MacSween as Director General of the National Art Centre during the period 1977-1987. This series contains two sub-series based on two distinct file classification systems. The file classification system originally put in place by Southam was used by MacSween until the inception of the new file classification system in 1980.

National Arts Centre (Canada). Office of the Director General : The Director General is the chief executive officer of the National Arts Centre Corporation. He or she is appointed by the Board of Trustees of the National Arts Centre and is responsible for the overall administration and operation of the corporation. The Director General reports to the Board of Trustees. In 1963, the National Capital Arts Alliance, an association of Ottawa arts organizations, presented the federal government with a proposal that called for the establishment of a National Centre for the Performing Arts in Ottawa. The federal government accepted this proposal in principle, and in 1964, appointed Hamilton Southam as Coordinator of the project. As such, Mr. Southam sat on the Interdepartmental Committee, a committee of interested and involved government departments which functioned as a board of trustees for the Centre until 1 December 1966. Southam also acted as a member of various advisory committees involved in the creation of the National Arts Centre and its home beside the Rideau Canal. On 1 December 1966, the Privy Council created a formal Board of Trustees for the National Arts Centre and the Board, at its inaugural meeting in March 1967, appointed Southam as Director General. Southam served as Director General until 1977 when he retired and was replaced by Donald MacSween. MacSween remained Director General until 1987. RG149 General Inventory
