193 microfilm reelsLanguage of material:EnglishScope and content:Series consists of records relating mostly to the Canadian Army, its recruitment, training, facilities and operations and activities in Canada during the Second World War. Shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War the Canadian Army recognized that they would need to modernize the existing 1903 Central Registry to handle all the subjects arising in the context of the war, particularly the administrative records generated by the expansion of the Canadian Army. As a result some numbers were reassigned to new subjects and in other cases whole blocks of numbers were cleared to handle a particular subject area, e.g. file numbers 701 to 765 were reserved for intelligence matters. In other cases numbers from the 1903 system remained as they were, e.g. file number 55 for Courts Martial. As an additional refinement, specific unit codes were produced for each unit of the army allowing for the filing of documents regardless of whether they were in Ottawa or in one of the commands across Canada. (The Canadian Army Overseas and units thereof used a separate filing system.)Additional information:Custodial history:This series includes many reels of microfilm containing files which were filmed by the Department of National Defence to save storage space. The Department destroyed the original paper files after filming. It should noted that the quality of the film is often poor.Dates of creation note:The microfilm records in this series were filmed by the Department of National Defence, presumably to save storage space. The original files were destroyed by the department after filming.Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG24-C-1-b -
