Scope and content:

Sub-series consists of records covering all manner of subjects related to early aviation, including northern exploration, specific aircraft or aircraft type. At the outset of the Air Board's operations, records were organized according to Department of Militia and Defence subject classification system in 1903. Militia and Defence reserved certain file blocks for the exclusive use of the Air Board, who then added secondary numbers according to their own requirements. This system continued in use after the creation of the RCAF, 1924 and throughout the 1920s and 1930s, being replaced only after the outbreak of the Second World War. Many war related subjects were transferred from this system to the Second Classification System and Central Registry.
