The first (Vol.3) consists of loose incoming correspondence relating to the audit of public accounts. This includes letters addressed to John Langton in his role as Secretary of the Treasury Board and to J.M. Courtney, Deputy Minister of Finance.
The second type of correspondence is that of the Auditor, John Langton, from his appointment in 1855 until his retirement and the subsequent re-organization of the Audit Office in 1878 (Vols.4-7). Also included in one letterbook is the correspondence between the Auditor and the Inspector General and the Minister of Finance for the period 1856-1864 (Vol.7).
The third type of correspondence consists of letterbooks containing outgoing correspondence between the Office and government agents in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, and British Columbia (Vols.8-9). One letterbook primarily consists of the payments, accounts, and expenditures of the Intercolonial Railway as well as the survey, 1875-1881, which preceeded the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
