Earlier drawings, executed prior to the artist's emigration from his native Poland to Québec in the mid-1980s, focus more on issues of personal and political repression. Included as well are satirical portraits of Prince Charles, Princess Diana, Yasser Arafat, and other world political and cultural leaders. Editorial cartoons primarily feature Québec politicians such as Lucien Bouchard, Jacques Parizeau and Daniel Johnston and satirize events which took place in that provincial arena. Many of the works deal with environmental and health topics, subjects which were the focus of several of his published humour books. There are also a series of cartoons originally published in La Presse dealing with the Montreal Canadiens' quest for the Stanley Cup, including the famous 1993 season when the Canadiens became playoff champions. The posters are advertising for two of his publications.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Pijet, André, 1954- : André Pijet was born in Poland in 1954. His early studies were in photography and the plastic arts and, in 1981, he graduated with teaching certificates in both fields. In 1984, he left Poland for Greece where he worked for a graphic design company while awaiting a visa to Canada. In 1988, he emigrated to Montreal where he began working as a free-lance artist specializing in humourous drawing and illustration. Participation in international cartoon competitions has earned him numerous prizes, including first prize at a 1996 book competition in Belgium. His drawings have been the subject of several publications. During the highly charged 1993 Stanley Cup semi-finals between the Quebec Nordiques and the Montreal Canadians, Pijet documented the battle in a very successful series published in La Presse. The cartoonist's early work is illustrative of a more 'black' form of humour, usually textless, which is popular with many European cartoonists. These satirical drawings often focus on personal and political repressions while later work frequently reflects the artist's environmental and social concerns.
