Fonds comprises works relating, predominantly, to the art of the comic book and to comic strips. A smaller component relates to editorial cartoons and graphic novels. Reference material includes comic book supplements from across the country which give an overview of the humourous offerings of the mainstream press.

Included are thirteen original drawings for the published science fiction comic books "Strange Mysteries" and "Journey Into Fear". Other original cartoon drawings are by artists Marc BellKent Burles, John Collins, John Dunnett, Dawna Gallagher, Hugh Lightbody, Lo Linkert, Rob MacDougall, Winslow Mortimer, Jean-Claude St-Aubin, and Ty Templeton.

Artists from alternate presses featured in the collection include the following: David Annesley with a poster of Beethoven designed for the Toronto Symphony; Barry Blair for "Elflord"; Jacques Boivin for "Jacques"; Leo Burdak for "Gearfoot Wreaks"; Dan Day for "Vortex"; Gene Day for "Star*Reach"; Gregory Gallant; Owen McCarron for Marvel's "Fun and Games Magazine"; Kenny Morin for "Nebula World of Elzon"; Gabriel Morrissette for "New Triumph featuring Northguard"; Owen Oulton for "Orion Magazine"; Dave Sim for "Imagine" fantasy comic book and a caricature of artist Gene Day; and Ken Steacy for a religious fantasy story. Many small promotional cards advertise the freelance work of graphic novelists, including Julie Doucette. Posters advertise a "bande-déssinée" based on the life of strongman Louis Cyr. Also included are twelve novelty aluminum coasters featuring cartoons by the former New Yorker and Playboy cartoonist Richard Taylor., Additional material received in 2005 includes additional superhero material by Dan and David Day, Ty Templeton and Paul Rivoche, an original editorial cartoon by John Yardley Jones, and a gag cartoon by Dick Lucas., Accruals in 2006 and 2007 added roughs from the "Ren and Stimpy" show and "Ripping Friends"; and works by such artists as Neil Hansen, Howard Cobb, Paul Rivoche, John Kricfalusi, Glen Loates, J. Ralston, Colin Upton, Pat McEown and Neil Vokes.

Bell, John, 1952- : John Bell (b. 1952) has worked for many years in the literary, publishing and archival fields. He is the editor of several compilations including "Ottawa, a Literary Portrait" by Pottersfield Press, c1992; "Visions from the Edge: an anthology of Atlantic Canadian science fiction and fantasy", co-edited with Lesley Choyce, Pottersfield Press, c1981; "Canuck Comics", Eden Press, c1986; "Halifax: a literary portrait", Potterfield Press, c1990. He has also curator of an exhibition and author of a catalogue, for the National Archives of Canada, entitled "Guardians of the North: the National Superhero in Canadian Comic-Book Art", 1992. This exhibition sought to demonstrate the many guises which Canadian cartoonists have used to portray superheroes - both in the mainstream and alternate presses. Bell's poetry has also appeared in many publications including the Literary Review of Canada.
