The Canadian Government established the programme at the end of the First World War, passing an Order in Council (PC 2389, 1 December 1919) to amend the "Department of Soldiers' Civil Re-Establishment Act." The programme undertook to pay a gratuity to any individual who had served in the British Imperial Forces (sea, land or air), who had been a Canadian citizen domiciled in Canada at the outbreak of war, and who after discharge once again took up residence in Canada. The gratuity was equal to the sum the applicant would have received had he or she been a member of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF). The amount of the gratuity was contingent on rank, length of service, and place of service, was to be deducted from any gratuity paid by the Imperial authorities, and was allocated in monthly instalments as outlined in the regulations governing the payment of gratuities to ex-members of the CEF (PC 3165, 21 December 1918).Additional information:Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the sub-series.Accruals:No further accruals are expected.Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG9-II-F-10 -
