Series consists of letterbooks and a collection of diagrams and newspaper clippings dealing with apatite mining. The atlas contains geological maps of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba from published reports, books, etc., produced by the Survey. The Outline plan contisting of maps relating to the Sydney coal field are not matched with any numbered maps or reports of the Geological Survey of Canada (provenance is uncertain).

Geological Survey of Canada. Office of the Librarian : The Library was an important part of the Geological Survey of Canada and by the 1880's it was considered "one of the great scientific libraries of the continent." Thomas C. Weston joined the Geological Survey of Canada in 1857 and became the first librarian. In 1882 Dr. John Thorburn was appointed head librarian and supervised an extensive recataloguing and acquisition program. By the turn of the century, overcrowding resulted in a further expansion and reorganization. A key player in this rejuvenation of the library was Mrs. Jane Alexander who served as Acting Librarian from 1907 until her death in 1912. RG45 General Inventory
