Sub-series consists of records created and maintained by the lockmaster at Merrickville, on the Rideau Canal. Records include lockmaster's journals, 1834-1837, 1907-1932; statements of lock dues collected, 1846-1869; cash books, 1864-1869, 1893-1897; lockmaster's log book, 1850-1865; letters and instructions addressed to the lockmaster, 1856-1882; book of way passes, 1903-1912, 1932-1939; and a daily record book, 1918-1921.

Canada. Dept. of Transport. Lockmaster (Merrickville, Ont.) : The lockmaster at Merrickville on the Rideau Canal was in direct charge of the lock station and reported to the Superintending Engineer of the Rideau Canal. The lockmaster enforced canal regulations, compiled statistics, supervised labourers, and prepared journals and reports. RG43 General Inventory

The Andrew Merrilees Collection, also in the Manuscript Division (MIKAN 102280, MG 31, series A10) contains original Rideau Canal records including lock records from the following locations: Lower Brewers' Mills, 1860-1862; Merrickville, 1837-1860; and Old Sly's, 1834-1880. Researchers may also wish to consult the Merrickville, Ont. fonds, 1891, in Manuscript Division (MIKAN 103060, MG9-D8-72).
