It includes Gingras' work on special studies for the War Amps of Canada for the Canadian prisoners of war taken by the Japanese at Hong Kong in 1941, his participation in different projects for the United Nation Organisation and the Canadian International Development Agency, the foundation of a rehabilitation center in Vietnam in 1965, his assistance in Morrocco in 1959-60 and for the thalidomide victims of the early 1960's. It contains also the manuscript of his autobiography "Combats pour la survie" (and its English translation "Feet was I to the lame") as well as diaries, diplomas, scrapbooks (containing press clippings and photographs), numerous speeches, addresses and publications. Finally included are moving images and sound recordings of talks and press conferences given by Gingras, in French and English, about his work.
Photographic material depicts the career of Gustave Gingras such as reception of awards, attendance at meetings, participation in the War Amps Association, the Canadian Medical Association, the Defence Medical Association, the St-John Ambulance, the RCMP, the Institut de Réadaptation de Montréal and the time of his mission in Vietnam. Also included is an album on rehabilitation clinics in Vietnam.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Gingras, Gustave, 1918-1996 : Gustave Gingras was born in Montréal on 18 January 1918. He received a classical education at College Bourget, Rigaud, Qué., where he graduated with a B.A. in 1936. Granted his M.D. by the Faculté de Médecine, Université de Montréal, in 1941, he immediately entered the Canadian Army Medical Corps and served overseas until the end of the war in 1945. He was then put in charge of rehabilitating veterans at the Queen Mary Veterans Hospital, Montreal. He was founder and Executive Director of the Institut de Réadaptation de Montréal/ Rehabilitation Institute of Montreal from its establishment in 1949 to his retirement in 1976. Gingras was both a national and international pioneer in the specialty of physical and rehabilitation medicine. His expertise and knowledge were highly regarded by the Université de Montréal, where he served as both Professor of Rehabilitation and Director of the School of Rehabilitation, 1954-76. Gingras produced more than one hundred papers on rehabilitation. The numerous honours and awards that Gingras received over the years are an indication of the mark he has left on rehabilitation medicine. The rehabilitation of war veterans was just part of Gingras' work.
In 1969, he received the Lasker Award for his rehabilitation work in Latin America for the United Nations, his leadership in the Moroccan oil poisoning disaster of 1959-1960 and his contribution to the Canadian rehabilitation program in Vietnam. In addition, he acted as an officer for many scientific/medical societies and non-professional bodies. After his retirement in 1976, Gingras relocated to Prince Edward Island where he was Director of Rehabilitations Services for the PEI Department of Health 1977-1980 and Chancellor of the University of PEI, 1974-1982. He was a consultant to the War Amps of Canada for special compensation for Canadians who were taken prisoner of war at Hong Kong as well as compensation for thalidomide victims of the early 1960's.
