The item consists of compiled appointment letters in a book, journal format. The letters were written by George Heriot when appointing postmasters in British North America. He wrote these letters as deputy postmaster general from 1800 to 1816. The letters were addressed to appointees in Nova Scotia, Lower Canada, Upper Canada, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. The last appointment in the book was made by his successor, Daniel Sutherland.
