Fonds consists of photographs depicting exterior and interior views of cinemas across Canada, including some which were part of the Famous Players Canadian Corporation chain; xeroxes of production stilles from Carry On, Sergeant (1928), and Melody ranch (1935); the premiere of Carry on, Sergeant held at the Regent Theatre, Toronto, Ontario in November 1928; model set built by Gordon Sparling for the film Carry on, Sergeant, taken by Len Humphries.

Also included in fonds are moving images including footage of eminent senior golf players at Scarboro, the Prince of Wales visit to Canada, 1920-1935; and one reel from the film Rudolph Valentino. Also included are two fiction feature films produced by Famous Players Film Corporation entitled Kelly (1980), and Clearcut (1990).

Famous Players : In 1916 the Majestic Theatre of Toronto was purchased by Canadian entrepreneur N.L. Nathanson. Nathanson, together with a group of financiers, continued to purchase movie theatres across Canada, naming them the Regent Theatres. In early 1920 Nathanson and associates approached Famous Players-Lasky Corporation for additional financing and a franchise for feature films. The result was Famous Players Canadian Corporation Limited (FPCCL), founded on 23 January 1920 under the name of Famous Players-Lasky. By the end of the first year the FPCCL was operating 20 theaters across Canada. In the 1970s Famous Players Limited (a new company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Paramount Communications Inc.) purchased all FPCCL's theatre operations. As a result FPCCL changed its named to Canadian Cablesystems Limited. The year 2000 marked the 80th Anniversary of Famous Players. Famous Players Limited website. 2001. 6 June 2002. . 1404

Photographs were loaned by Famous Players to the Public Archives of Canada 1977 in order that copy negatives be made. Two sets of copy negatives were made: one by the National Film, Television, and Sound Archives, which were assigned negative numbers NFA 3532 to NFA 4569:34-38, and one by the National Photography Collection, which made two selections of photographs and accessioned them under accession numbers 1977-265 and 1978-11. The run of negatives created by the National Television, Film and Sound Archives is complete whereas that of the National Photography Collection, being a selection, is not. When the two separate entities of the National Archives were brought together it was decided to move all photographs of the former National Film, Television and Sound Archives to the former National Photography Collection's domain where the collection of photographs of which the Famous Players copies form a part were accessioned under accession number 1996-135.
Moving images in accession 1988-0045 were received in 1988 from Doug A. Mahaney of General Sound, a division of Famous Players Ltd. All other moving image material was received between 1980 and 1991 from various sources.

Photographs arranged alphabetically by province, and within this, alphabetically by theatre name.

Location of duplicates note:

Famous Players Canadian Corp., Toronto, Ontario no longer holds the originals of these photographs. The copy negatives at the National Archives therefore appear to be the only existing copies of these photographs.
