The fonds consists of revisions to Fred Jarrett's 1929 edition of BNA book : stamps of British North America. Included are actual pages from this edition with revision notes and corrections. The items also include typed correction notes and correspondence between Fred Jarrett and other philatelists about various research topics. A single bound volume -- a copy of Jarrett's 1929 edition -- has been scrupulously annotated and augmented, and completes the textual series. A handwritten note on the title page indicates that all notations and corrections were made between 1929 and 1946.

Fonds also consists of 1 British American Bank Note Company trade sample sheet of postage stamps bearing engraved vignettes, in black and green, of stamp and bank motifs, 1 sheet of the Six Pence Halfpenny deep rose denomination from the 1861 imperforate Newfoundland issue, 1 sheet of the One Shilling, light rose denomination from the same issue, and 1 sheet of the 1890 Newfoundland Queen Victoria Three Cents grey lilac issue, with the 1897 One Cent surcharges.

Jarrett, Fred, 1888-1979 : Fred Jarrett was born in Huntsville, Ont., on March 26, 1889. He lived mostly in the Toronto area until his death in 1979. He was survived by his wife Elsie and two children. He moved from Huntsville to Toronto after completing high school in 1905. After completing a business course, he won the Canadian Typing Championship in 1907. This led to employment with Underwood as a demonstrator and school representative.

During World War I, Jarrett served as secretary to the Minister of Overseas Military Forces in England. He added to his phialtelic collection while serving in Europe. It was in 1935 that Jarrett was appointed the Managing Director of Canada for the Greg Publishing Company. He remained with the company until 1951, when he rejoined Underwood and remained there until retirement in 1960.

Fred Jarrett began collecting philatelic material when he was a school boy and the hobby would carry on into his adult years. Mr. Jarrett had collected a large collection of British North America stamps. He had the largest known mint blocks of Canada 1868 Large Cents. His collections were strong in essays, proofs, and cancellations. He was honored with the Order of Canada, and elected to The Rolls of Distinguished Philatelists. As well, Jarrett was an Honorary President and First Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada, Honorary Life Member of the Toronto Stamp Collectors Club, Honorary Fellow of the Canadian Philatelic Society of Great Britain, and a member of the American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame. Fred Jarrett is the author of BNA book : stamps of British North America, first published in 1923 and appearing as a 3rd edition in 1929. As a stamp dealer in Toronto, Mr. Jarrett produced Jarrett's BNA record as a in-house publication for use by clients.

Custodial history:

The textual record was found in collection from the National Postal Museum (CPC) and was transferred to the Canadian Postal Archives (NAC) in 1988., The philatelic record was purchased from two separate sources - the trade sample sheet of Queen Victoria vignettes from J. N. Sissons Inc. of Toronto (Auction Sale No. 519, Lot 35), and the three Newfoundland sheets from R. Maresch and Son, also of Toronto (Sale No. 270, Lots 1249, 1252 and 1385)., The single volume was acquired in 1993.

Philatelic note:

On the sheets of the 1897 Newfoundland Surcharged issue (actually printed on two half-sheets), the top sheet margin was removed to ensure the uniformity of the surcharge.
