Pittaway & Jarvis : Alfred George Pittaway was born in England in 1858. He came to Canada when he was ten years old, shortly becoming acquainted with Samuel S. Jarvis. Samuel J. Jarvis was born in Ottawa in 1863. In 1882, they joined forces and established a photographic studio. The partners opened their first studio at 117 Sparks street on February 15, 1882 under the name of Pittaway-Jarvis Limited. In 1912 further expansion was marked by the opening of the Jarvis Studio at 281 Bank street. Five years later in 1917 a shop for kodaks and art goods was opened at 16 Rideau street. The business prospered, particularly for their work of photographing political celebrities of the times, and also for their group pictures of official parties at Government House and Ottawa's society weddings of past years. Alfred G. Pittaway died in 1930 in Ottawa. Samuel J. Jarvis retired in 1936. His son Gordon Jarvis took over the business under Pittaway & Jarvis. Samuel J. Jarvis died in 1952 in Ottawa.
