3 watercolours.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of journals of Walter Butler Cheadle, 1862-1864, in four parts, with an annotated copy of Henry Youle Hind's "A Sketch of an Overland Route to British Columbia", carried by Milton and Cheadle on their experiences, transcription, volume 1; manuscripts of the "North West Passage by Land" and of lectures and articles composed by W.B. Cheadle, based on his experiences in travelling from Red River to British Columbia, volume 2; and three watercolours, all by Frederick Whymper, of: Fort Yale, B.C., 1863; Victoria, Vancouver Island, 1863; and On Pavilion Mountain, British Columbia, 1863.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Cheadle, W. B. (Walter Butler), 1835-1910 : Walter Butler Cheadle, an English physician, travelled across Canada in company with his friend William Fitzwilliam, Viscount Milton, 1862-1864. Following their return to England, they jointly published the "North West Passage by Land" (London, [1865]), basing the work on Cheadle's journals. The journals were later published under the title "Cheadle's Journal of a Trip Across Canada", 1862- 1863, edited by A.G. Doughty and G. Lanctôt (1931).Additional information:General note:Received in 1935 from the estate of Dr. W.W.
