Collection consists of 69 black and white photographs depicting Canadian soldiers in German prisoner-of-war camps during World War Two. The photographs originally belonged to Thomas Wright McLean, who was captured at Dieppe in 1942, and who is depicted in many of the photographs. The collection consists of: nine photographs of unidentified officials at Stalag IIB (probably German camp officials and Canadian prisoner of war representatives meeting with International Red Cross inspectors; twenty-six photographs of prisoners-of-war engaged in various activities at Stalag IIB, with Thomas McLean identified in several photographs; four photographs depicting sports activities at a prisoner-of-war camp (Stalag IIID?); six photographs/postcards depicting prisoners-of-war engaged in various activities at Stalag IIID; four group portraits of prisoners-of-war from Stalag VIIIB; five photographs depicting various sporting events and teams at prisoner-of-war camp(s); seven photographs, unidentified, of Canadian soldiers ; six photographs of the Royal Regiment of Canada in Iceland, with Thomas McLean identified in several; and two photographs of unidentified prisoners-of-war standing in front of brick wall, Stalag IID.

McLean, Thomas Wright, 1920-1978 : Thomas Wright McLean was born at Glasgow, Scotland on the August 31, 1920 and died March 15, 1978 in Mississauga, Ontario. It is not known when he emigrated to Canada, but he did attend Bloor Collegiate in Toronto for at least part of Grade 9, the probable last year of his formal education. McLean worked at various labourer type jobs and as a truck driver and mechanic until his enrolment at the No. 2 District Depot with the Royal Regiment of Canada on June 6, 1940. He served as a private with the 1st Battalion of the Regiment until his discharge on September 10, 1945. Part of his duties were as a medic (stretcher bearer). As a member of the Royal Regiment McLean embarked overseas on June 10, 1940, just four days after enrolling. The regiment disembarked in Iceland on June 16 for training and defence work. By June 1941 the Regiment was in the UK. He married Doreen Cooke, an English woman, just before he was sent on the Dieppe raid, (the couple later divorced). The next day the Regiment embarked for Dieppe (France), and McLean was listed as missing in action on the 19th. He was officially reported as a prisoner-of-war on October 21, 1942 at Camp 7, Moranez, France. McLean was not wounded during the action, and worked in a hospital in nearby Rouen after capture. He was transferred to Stalag 8B in Germany as POW 27283 sometime after December 24, 1942, and then to Stalag 2D in May 1944. He was reported back in the UK as of May 10, 1945 and was officially discharged from the Canadian Army in September. As a result of his contributions to the war effort, McLean was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and clasp, and the 1939-1945 Star - Defence Medal France and Germany Star. McLean re-enrolled in the army on February 9, 1961 and was discharged in May 1965 at the rank of Corporal. Thomas McLean's army personnel records.
