Ross, Bernard Rogan : Bernard Rogan Ross, photographer, (born at Londonderry, Ireland, 25 Sept. 1827; died at Toronto, Ont., 21 June 1974) was born and educated in Londonderry, Ireland, son of James Ross and Elizabeth Rogan. He joined the Hudson's Bay Company in June, 1843, as an apprentice clerk at Norway House. He served at a number of northern posts until he was appointed a Chief Trader in 1856. He served at Fort Simpson from 1858-1862. Following this he was at Moose Factory for several years and at Fort Garry during the Riel uprising. He retired from the company in 1871 and died during a visit to Toronto three years later.

Ross was a founding member of the Anthropological Society of London (1863) and a member of the Royal Geographical Society from 1864 in addition to other scientific groups. He was responsible for some notable donations of both natural history objects and meteorological information to the Smithsonian Institution through Robert Kennicott. While he was at Fort Simpson he undertook extensive observations and collected widely to illustrate the natural history and ethnology of the Mackenzie River region. It was probably about this time that he began to use photographs to support his scientific pursuits. Certainly he was the most active of the officers at Moose Factory while he was there.
