Confederation Life, beginning in 1927, commissioned Canadian artists, including John David Kelly (1862-1958), H. B. Goodridge (b. 1903- ) and others, to execute paintings of selected Canadian historical scenes. These works were in turn reproduced as calendars and in advertising campaigns, and re-issued in two portfolios as Confederation Life's "Gallery of Canadian History". The original paintings hung in Confederation Life's head office in Toronto, and were sold along with the building to Rogers-Cantel Ltd. in 1997. Copies of these works were transferred to the Archives from 1930 to 1970.

The company was formed by Senator William McMaster, president of the Bank of Commerce, Henry Beatty, later president of the Bank of Toronto, Sir William Pearce Howland and John Kay Macdonald. Sir Francis Hinks became Confederation Life's first president. William McCabe was made the company's first general manager and was replaced by Macdonald in 1875 when the latter was made managing director. Macdonald served Confederation Life for 57 years as managing director, vice-president and finally president. The firm was run by a succession of Macdonalds with John Kay's son, Charles Strange Macdonald becoming president in 1930 and his grandson, John Kenneth Macdonald serving as president from 1947 to 1969. From its formation Confederation Life quickly expanded across Canada, establishing branches in major centres across the country before 1880. The first overseas branches opened in the Caribbean and Mexico (1902), followed by London, England (1904). In the interwar period the company's overseas network was expanded to include offices in South America and the United States (1926), and Asia (1932).
