Zacharias, Nickolaus, 1908- : Born into a Mennonite family in the southern Ukraine in 1908, Nickolaus Zacharias learned to be a bookkeeper. Despite war, famine and the Stalinist terror which saw many members of his family killed by Stalin's secret police during the 1930s, Nickolaus Zacharias was able to survive, supporting both himself, his wife, whom he had married in 1930, and his children. During the Second World War, his family as well as other Mennonites in the southern Ukraine left the Soviet Union in front of the retreating German military. In 1944, Zacharias was drafted into the German army, where he served until the end of the war. For this he was sentenced to ten years hard labour by Soviet authorities. While still serving his sentence, he got into contact with his wife who in the meantime had emigrated to Paraguay. With the help of her brother, she came to Canada in 1952. In Canada, she worked in a hospital as kitchen help and looked after their children. After trying for ten years to bring her husband to Canada from the Soviet Union, she succeeded in doing so in 1966 when their immediate family was again re-united.
