The series consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, and supporting documentation relating to membership and funding. The nature of membership and sources of funding changed significantly from the founding of the Federation in the 1940s through to the 1980s. A membership comprised of individual scholars gave way to a membership of constituent academic associations and universities. Funding from charitable or philanthropic foundations was replaced by funding from government agencies, learned societies and universities. The early membership files hold circulars to members and the executive committee, general correspondence pertaining to membership and funding, nominal correspondence with individual members, universities, academic associations, and international organizations. After 1968 the files are more heavily weighted to correspondence with government agencies like the Canada Council and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRCC), but there is also documentation of the Federation's continuing relationships with universities and learned societies.
