Record information Money scrip to Métis [textual record]
Date:1876-1927Reference:R190-47-7-E, RG15-D-II-8-fType of material:Textual materialFound in:Archives / Collections and FondsItem ID number:156359Date(s):1876-1927Bilingual equivalent:Place of creation:CanadaExtent:3.0 m of textual recordsLanguage of material:EnglishScope and content:Sub-series consists of cancelled money scrip notes which were issued to Métis residents by the Department of the Interior in exchange for the extinguishment of certain land claims. These notes were issued "to the bearer," and could be applied to the purchase of, or as a down payment on, any Dominion lands which were open for entry. The scrip was generally awarded to Métis heads of families and to children of Métis heads of families (and their heirs in the event of a death) in amounts totaling $160.Additional information:General note:This series contains scrip documents, which are foundational documents of the Métis Nation. In the late 18th century in the northwest, the Métis people coalesced into a distinct nation with their own culture, traditions, and language (Michif). Their homeland extends across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, as well as parts of Ontario, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and the Northern United States. Scrip certificates indicated the right of the holder to receive payment later in the form of money or land. Scrip was distributed to the Métis by the federal government of Canada in exchange for their land rights as a method of extinguishing their Aboriginal title to the land.Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the sub-series.Accruals:No further accruals are expected.Related material:To find the money scrip awarded to a specific claimant when the scrip registration number is unknown, researchers will have to obtain the registration number from the delivery registers (see, Registers and indexes relating to Métis and Original White Settlers land records sub-series within this fonds, RG15-D-II-8-m, specifically volumes 1518, 1519, and 1520). The delivery registers are organized alphabetically, according to the last name of the claimant. Researchers can then use this number to find the appropriate entry in finding aid 15-24 which will then provide the RG 15 volume number where the original scrip note is stored.Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG15-D-II-8-f -
