Dept. of Agriculture. Experimental Station (Kapuskasing, Ont.) : The Experimental Station at Kapuskasing was established in 1914 and began operations in 1916 under the direction of J.P.S. Ballantyne. It opened after isolated pioneer settlements along the Northern Transcontinental railway had demonstrated the feasibility of farming in the North. The Experimental Station was planned both to promote the region as a focus of settlement, as well as to demonstrate what could and could not be grown in the area. In recent years, the work of the Station has concentrated on improving the efficiency of beef production in Eastern Canada.
