Sub-series consists of the minutebooks, legal, financial and marketing records of the Montreal Cotton Company and Montreal Cottons Limited. The minutebooks include detailed information on the formation and operation of the company's mills at Valleyfield. All aspects of its business can be found, from the price paid for raw cotton to labour relations. Documentation on the financial control and management of the mills is also included. The Montreal Cottons Minutebooks of the 1930s and 1940s contain detailed monthly financial reports and useful discussions about war-related production problems.

Legal records include letters patent, a stock ledger and transfer book, and provincial returns for Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia. The marketing records contain price lists from 1906-1951. These lists identify the types and prices of cloth sold by the company.

Records which document the financial activity of the company include corporate ledgers, profit and loss schedules and financial statements. Individual employee earning records are available for a ten year period between 1936 and 1946. A 1936 insurance appraisal of the Valleyfield mills provides extensive detail about the complex and its machinery.

Sub-series also includes a sub-sub-series related to the records of the Valleyfield Electric Company.

Additional records pertaining to Montreal Cottons Ltd. are located in the Dominion Textile Inc. series. After 1930, management issues were increasingly handled in the Dominion Texile head office. Dominion Textile thus maintained records on both Montreal Cotton's financial matters and trademarks. Of particular importance are files documenting labour negotiations between Montreal Cottons and the United Textile Workers of America which date back to 1944.

Montreal Cotton Co : The Montreal Cotton Company (Moco) was established in 1873 by Sir Hugh Allan. Located in Valleyfield, Quebec, the company was able to take advantage of protective tariffs to become a significant presence in the Canadian textile industry. By 1900, under the leadership of Alexander F. Gault, the complex had expanded to four mills which produced cotton yarns, grey cloth as well as finished cottons. In 1911, the directors of Dominion Textile acquired control of the firm and renamed the company, Montreal Cottons Limited.

Dominion Textile's slow acquisition of Montreal Cottons continued in 1918, when Sir Charles Gordon became president of Moco. All subsequent Dominion Textile presidents also held this title. Dominion Textile assumed responsibility for Moco's management in 1930 and sales network in 1934. Dominion Textile officially acquired Montreal Cottons in 1948 and operated it as a subsidiary until 1972, when operations were integrated into the parent company.

The enormous Valleyfield mills of the Montreal Cotton Co. were at the centre of the Canadian textile industry. The complex was the largest of its kind in Canada until the 1960s, when Dominion Textile began closing some of the older mills. They were also the site of some of the most disruptive labour disputes in the industry.
