Sub-series documents the activities of the Dominion Cotton Mills Company from its establishment to its merger with Dominion Textile. The executive records include annual reports, by-laws, lists of shareholders and minutebooks. The minutes provide details on all aspects of operating the company and reveal the financial difficulties which led to the creation of Dominion Textile in 1905. Subject files provide additional detail on cost and labour information, particularly for the Magog mill. The extensive financial records include annual statements, ledgers, journal and loan records and insurance valuations. Trial balance books contain mill inventories, profit and loss accounts, trade accounts and insurance registers as well as trial balances. Sub-series also consists of four sub-sub-series related to the records of V. Hudon Cotton Mills Company, La Compagnie de filature Sainte-Anne, Hochelaga Cotton Manufacturing Company, Magog Textile & Print Company.

Dominion Cotton Mills Co : The Dominion Cotton Mills Company was organized by A.F. Gault and David Morrice in 1890. The company was the result of a massive merger in the industry, bringing together eight separate cotton mills in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes with the head office being located in Montreal. The following companies were included in the merger: The Hochelaga Cotton Manufacturing Company; The Magog Textile and Print Company, both of Montreal; The Coaticook Cotton Company of Coaticook, Quebec; The Nova Scotia Cotton Manufacturing Company of Halifax; The Craven Cotton Manufacturing Company of Brantford, Ontario; The Kingston Cotton Manufacturing Company Limited, Kingston, Ontario, The Moncton Cotton Manufacturing Company, Moncton, New Brunswick; and The Windsor Cotton Manufacturing Company of Windsor, Nova Scotia.

The merger was an effort to stabilize and strengthen the Canadian cotton industry by concentrating ownership of most of the Canadian cotton mills. The merger allowed Gault to control the entire production process from griege cotton to finished cloth. He could not, however, control the fluctuating costs of raw cotton, and overproduction in the early 1900s still made Dominion Cotton Mills Co. vulnerable to economic downturns. This situation laid the groundwork for the creation of Dominion Textile, and in 1905, the Dominion Cotton Mills Co. merged with three other mills to form the textile giant. The Dominion Cotton Mills Co. was not legally dissolved until 1920, even though all of its assets had been previously absorbed into Dominion Textile.
