Sub-series includes the company minutebooks, charter and bylaws of the Merchants' Manufacturing Company. The minutebooks contain much detailed information on the formation of the company, mill construction, labour strife, and attempts at price regulation. They also record the amalgamation negotiations which led to the organization of Dominion Textile.

Merchants' Manufacturing Co : The Merchants' Manufacturing Company of Montreal was organized in 1880 by Gilman Cheney, A.A. Ayer, the Honourable Robert Mackay and Alexander Ewan. Renamed the Merchants Cotton Company in 1897, the Merchants' Manufacturing Company was the only major Canadian cotton mill not part of the Alexander Gault or David Morrice cartel. The company produced bleached shirtings, grey & fancy cottons and bedding in direct competition with the Gault/Morrice mills. In 1905, the company was one of the founding members of Dominion Textile. The Merchants Cotton Company leased its assets to Dominion Textile until 1920 when Dominion Textile acquired all outstanding stock and wound up the company. The Merchant's mill continued to operate until 1967, when it was declared obsolete.
