Series consists largely of records created and maintained by the Office of the Chief Superintendent, Upper Canada. The series includes incoming correspondence, out-going letterbooks, miscellaneous office records, and an entry book relating to the Six Nations Indian Council. The 'miscellaneous office records' have been attached to this series for many years. However, they include records that post-date the abolition of the Office of the Chief Superintendent. Moreover, the 'miscellaneous office records' include documents with no obvious link to the Office of the Chief Superintendent, including documents relating to not only the Indian administration in Canada West but also the Indian administration in Canada East.

Upper Canada. Chief Superintendent of Indian Affairs : In 1830, the Indian Department was split along Province lines. The Indian Department in Upper Canada was placed under civil control under the Lieutenant-Governor, Sir John Colborne. Colonel James Givins (sometimes spelled 'Givens')was appointed Chief Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Province of Upper Canada. Givins held this post until his retirement in 1837 at which time he was succeeded by Samuel Peters Jarvis. In addition to his duties of overall superintendence of the Indian administration in Upper Canada, the Chief Superintendent was also responsible for the affairs of a number of individual bands scattered throughout the south-central part of the Province who were not under the supervision of a resident agent. It would appear that the theoretical extent of control which the Office of the Chief Superintendent should have exercised over the Indian Department in the Province exceeded the reality of the situation. Evidence presented to the Bagot Commission indicates that the Chief Superintendent, despite occupying in name at least a position of head of the Indian Department bureaucracy in fact exercised very little control over the activities of the various resident agents. Following the recommendation of the Commission of Inquiry into the Indian Department (the Bagot Commission), 1842, a general reorganization of the Department was undertaken. The two branches of the Indian Department were re-united. In 1844, the Civil Secretary was designated as Superintendent General for Indian Affairs and the office of Chief Superintendent in Canada West was abolished the following year.
