Album contains photographs, many halftone illustrations, and press clippings documenting activities and personnel of the Royal Canadian Regiment during the South African War, 1899-1901. The album, created by Major Rogers, is a valuable representation of a Canadian military man's impressions of his Boer War experiences. Connecting ideas of Canadian nationalism with British imperialism and war with heroism in the late 19th century is evident throughout the album. The themes of adventure, camaraderie and loyalty predominate, views of death and destruction are few. Views include: General Hutton's farewell address before the Canadian Contingent embarked for South Africa from Quebec City, Quebec; celebrations and ceremonies welcoming the Contingent home in London, at Windsor Castle with Queen Victoria; scenes with personal friends and fellow officers; dugouts in banks of the Modder River, Paardeburg, South Africa.
