In the form of photostats of original documents, transcripts from original documents and microfilm of original classes, these records document the collection of revenues, the disbursement of funds, and more generally military and naval matters. Major topics include: the Hudson's Bay Company, Newfoundland fisheries, trade and navigation, the audit of accounts of revenues in the colonies; auditors' reports; the payment of pensions and allowances; Receiver General's accounts; American Loyalists and American Prizes Commission.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Great Britain. Treasury : In 1707, the Treasury became, as a result of the Union with Scotland, the Treasury of Great Britain, and since the Act of 1816 consolidating the public revenue of Great Britain and Ireland, has been the Treasury of the United Kingdom. The Treasurership has been permanently in commission since 1714. The Lords Commissioners met as a Board to discuss matters of financial detail down to the nineteenth century. Since that time, it has come to have the shape of a ministerial department headed by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
The Treasury of Great Britain is responsible for the control and management of public revenue and its expenditure. It is the primary instrument for controlling expenditure by government departments of the money voted by Parliament. The Treasury is a prerogative department and many of its powers are derived from statutes. The Treasury was a major instrument of British imperial policy directing the financial affairs of the colonies including British North America. In this, the Treasury was closely associated with the Board of Trade and the Customs Board.
To illustrate the close relationship between Treasury and the colonies, it should be noted, for example, that military, naval and ordnance departments corresponded with the Treasury in detail and accounted to it for their transatlantic activities. Commissions to manage refugee claims such as those of the United Empire Loyalists were dependent on the Treasury as a revenue collecting body and had to account to the Treasury as certainly as the Receivers General themselves. There may be a Treasury connection in any matter which involved or might involve the spending of government money.
