Album contains albumen prints, taken by Notman Studios, and was offered to His Royal Highness Prince Arthur by Sir Hugh Allan, as a souvenir of his visit to Belmere, Quebec, in June 1870.

Views include the house "Belmere" and Lake Memphremagog. Group portraits of the guests include H.R.H. Prince Arthur, the Governor-General and Lady Lisgar, Hugh Allan, etc. Some portraits have been retouched by Henry Sandham.

Arthur, Prince, Duke of Connaught, 1850-1942 : Governor General.

The Duke of Connaught was the third son of Queen Victoria. He received his military education at the Royal Military Academy. After receiving a commission with the Royal Engineers, he transferred to the 1st Battalion of the Rifle Brigade of the Royal Artillery and was stationed in Montreal, 1869-1870, where he saw action against the Fenians. Thereafter, he was stationed in Gibraltar, Egypt and Brazil and became a Field Marshall in 1902. He was Governor General of Canada, 1911-1916, leaving after a quarrel with Sir Sam Hughes, Minister of Militia. After his second Canadian posting, he travelled extensively in various functions in Greece, Egypt, Palestine and India.
