Indian and Eskimo Affairs Program (Canada). Battleford Agency : The Battleford Agency in Saskatchewan was established when the first agent was appointed in January 1877. The agency was initially responsible for large areas of southern Alberta and Saskatchewan (Treaties 4, 6 and 7)although its scope of responsibility narrowed with the opening of new agencies. Its responsibilities gradually narrowed to those Treaty 6 bands in the vicinity of the community of Battleford. During the period 1936-1948, the Battleford Agency assumed responsibility for Treaty 10 bands which had previously been administered through the Ile à la Crosse (sometimes spelled Isle à la Crosse) Agency. Those bands became the administrative responsibility of the Meadow Lake Agency upon its creation in 1948. The Battleford Agency and the Meadow Lake Agency merged to form the North Battleford District Office effective 1 April 1970.
