Manitowapah Agency : An agent was first appointed for the Manitowapah Agency on 1 January 1877. The administrative history of the agency is somewhat confusing in that, for many years, a single agent, with headquarters at the town of Portage la Prairie, was responsible for the bands of the Manitowapah Agency but also for the bands of the Portage la Prairie Agency. Departmental records kept distinct the two separate administrative units. Sometime in the early 1940s, a single Portage la Prairie Agency was created, with responsibility for bands which had heretofore been administered through the two separate agencies. In 1948, however, responsibility for most of the bands which had originally been administered through the Manitowapah Agency was transferred from the Portage la Prairie Agency to the newly-created Dauphin Agency (with headquarters at Dauphin). In 1967, the Dauphin Agency and the Portage la Prairie Agency were amalgamated into the Brandon District.
