Geiger-Torel, Herman, 1907-1976 : Born in Germany, Herman Geiger-Torel, son of musician Rosy Geiger-Kullmann, studied opera production at the Hoch Conservatory. He began a career as a producer in Europe and Latin America, where he produced six operas at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In 1943 he became senior producer with the national opera of Uruguay, and in 1945 held the same post at the Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro. Invited to teach at the Royal Conservatory Opera School in Toronto, Geiger-Torel moved to Canada in 1948 and also became a producer at that school. From 1950 to 1976, he was successively appointed senior producer, artistic director and general manager of the Canadian Opera Company. In 1969 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
