Fonds comprises original editorial cartoons by Roy Peterson, published in the Vancouver Sun, dating 1962-1993. Included are caricatures executed from the inception of his career; the fonds spans over thirty years of work, and demonstrates the honing of his caricature skills. The editorial cartoons are predominantly national and international in interest. However, his perspective on British Columbia politics is also represented, commencing with the tenure of W.A.C. Bennett up to and including the recent cabinet of Mike Harcourt. Provincial and municipal leaders include Phil Gaglardi, William R. Bennett, Dave Barrett, Mayor Tom Campbell and Bill Vander Zalm. National issues cover every major Canadian political event from the flag debate of 1963 to our most current constitutional disaccords. National leaders include Lester B. Pearson, John Diefenbaker, Réal Caouette, Tommy Douglas, Robert Stanfield, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Joe Clark, John Turner, Brian Mulroney, Kim Campbell and Jean Chrétien. Major issues covered include federal-provincial relations, western alienation, taxes, G.S.T., government spending, the deficits, budgets, the economy and unemployment, health care, poverty, social programs, Senate reform, leadership campaigns and elections, separatism, the Meech and Charlottetown Accords, and the national referendum. International subjects profiled include Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, Harold Macmillan, Harold Wilson, Margaret Thatcher, Charles de Gaulle, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnston, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Bill Clinton, and Fidel Castro. International issues include the Cold War, nuclear arms, terrorism and repressive régimes, the Middle East conflicts, the dissolution of the Russian empire, international conflicts, the United Nations, peacekeeping, and foreign aid.

Peterson, Roy, 1936-2013 : Cartoonist. Roy Peterson was born in Winnipeg in 1936 and moved with his family to Vancouver in 1948. By 1962, he was working as a freelance illustrator. That same year he began working for the Vancouver Sun where he has been staff editorial cartoonist for close to forty years. His work has appeared in every major Canadian magazine and his international clients include the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Spectator and Punch. For over twenty years, he worked with columnist Allan Fotheringham, illustrating the back pages of Maclean's magazine.

With Stanley Burke, Roy Peterson created a series of best-selling 'political fables' entitled Frog Fables & Beaver Tales (1973). The publications featured Pierre Trudeau and other prominent politicians of the day as the residents of a swamp. Published collections of his work include The World According to Roy Peterson (1979) and Drawn and Quartered: The Trudeau Years (1984), with commentaries by Peter C. Newman.

National honours include his record-breaking seven National Newspaper Awards. In 1973, he placed first in the world competition at the International Salon of Cartoons in Montreal. His caricatures have been displayed at the Smithsonian Institute, the United Nations and the American and Canadian Embassies in London, England. He was active in the memberships and boards of both the Association of Canadian Editorial Cartoonists and the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.

He was married to Margaret Elizabeth Peterson with whom he had five children. See published collections of his work and The Hecklers (1979), by Peter Desbarats and Terry Mosher. Roy Peterson passed away in Vancouver on September 30, 2013.
