Caricatures examine, primarily, national issues and include such topics as: federal-provincial relations, as seen from a prairie perspective; the rise of the Reform Party, from its ascendency in Alberta and its increasing influence in other provinces; the constitutional debates; income tax and the G.S.T.; cut-backs in social programs as initiated by the governments of Ralph Klein and Mike Harris; the plight of the western farmer; fishing disputes; the softwood lumber dispute and N.A.F.T.A.; poverty and the elderly; environmental concerns; health care and a two-tiered system; gun control and the Canadian Gun Registry; the Young Offender's Act; defence spending; the Oka crisis and aboriginal concerns; the Meech Lake Accord. International issues include the dissolution of the Soviet empire; Canada-U.S. relations; the Middle East; the Baltic upheavals; armed conflicts; the Gulf War; the Iraq War; ethnic-cleansing; hot-spots in Third World nations; the September 11th strikes; and Al-Qaeda.
Prime Ministers portrayed include Kim Campbell, Joe Clark, Jean Chrétien, Stephen Harper, Paul Martin, Brian Mulroney and John Turner. Prominent Cabinet Ministers include Sheila Copps, John Crobie, John Manley, Don Mazankowski, Anne McLellan, Allan Rock, and Michael Wilson. Fred Curatolo, born in 1958, first published his cartoons in 1982, in the Toronto Sun. For several more years, he syndicated his work before moving to the Brampton Guardian. In 1989, he joined the staff of the Edmonton Sun where he continued as their staff cartoonist until 2006. He is now working as a free-lance cartoonist.
