Fonds comprises original editorial cartoons by Alan King, published in the Ottawa Citizen. The majority of the works examine issues of national relevancy. Recurring themes include federal-provincial relations, the economy, taxes, the Constitution, federal election campaigns and results, natural resources, fishing industry, environmental concerns, crime, free trade, health care, unemployment, judicial and aboriginal issues and government scandals. Politicians of note are Brian Mulroney, Michael Wilson, Preston Manning, Joe Clark, and Jean Chrétien. Provincial issues focus frequently on election results, government cut-backs, inter-provincial relations, and First Ministers' conferences. Personalities include Bob Rae, David Peterson, Mike Harris and Robert Bourassa. International issues of note are Canada-U.S. reltions, the Soviet crisis, the Gulf War, foreign election results, armed conflicts, famines, Third World development, the Berlin War, and human rights infringements. Foreign leaders include Mikhail Gorbachev, Saddam Hussein, Margaret Thatcher, John Major and George Bush.

King, Alan, 1947-2021 : Editorial cartoonist and illustrator. Alan King was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1947. He emigrated to Canada with his family at the age of two. Before beginning his cartooning career, King worked in numerous professions - from high school teacher to art director. In 1979, he was hired as the editorial cartoonist for the Ottawa Citizen. In 1996, he left the newspaper and began work as a freelance designer and portraitist. He has completed several commission pieces of prominent Canadian personalities. See various editions of "Portfoolio", an annual compendium of cartooning highlights, published by the Association of Canadian Editorial Cartoonists. Alan King passed away on February 8, 2021.
