Fonds consists of Antonino Spada's personal correspondence with members of the Italian community in Canada and the Canadian and Italian governments; material relating to his founding of the Italo-Canadian Society; documents relating to his fight against fascism within the Italian-Canadian community before and during the Second World War including his assistance to the families of those persons interned by the federal government and his work with the Canadian Aid to Italy Fund and American Relief for Italy, Inc.; miscellaneous issues of L'Indipendente, 1933-1937 and L'Azione Italo Canadese, 1933; an issue of "Now: Hitler over Canada" [1939?]; a souvenir programme of the Italian Great War Veterans Association Ottawa dinner and banquet in Hull, 1933; miscellaneous newsletters and research material for his book "The Italians in Canada", 1971; information files and research notes for his study of Italian history in Canada as well as his personal memoirs.

Spada, Antonino, 1901-1990 : Antonino Spada was an influential journalist, life-long democrat and community leader in the Italian community in Canada in the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Floridia, Italy in 1901, he came to Canada in 1924 and settled in Montreal where he operated a bakery. A founding member of the Order of Italo-Canadians, he also owned and edited Il Cittadino Canadese which is published in Montreal. It was the first Italian weekly newspaper in Canada which he founded in 1941. Its editorial content was strongly pro-democratic and anti-fascist, reflecting his personal views. Mr. Spada devoted the better part of his working life to helping fellow Italian Canadians during times of crisis. Founder of the Free Italy Movement, he was one of the community's leading anti-fascist spokesmen during the war years. During that period, he helped many families in the community whose brothers and fathers were interned by the federal government. As a result of his generosity, he lost his bakery. After the liberation of Italy, he was active in the Canadian Aid to Italy Fund. After the war, he continued to work with the federal government to promote and instill Canadian democratic values amongst his countrymen and maintained a working relationship with the Italian government. The author of The Italians in Canada, he spent his retirement years writing about the history of the Italian community in Canada. He died in 1990.
