Series consists of St. Lawrence River Pilot's certificates from the period 1762 to 1840. Volume 3 contains regulations for masters and pilots sailing the St. Lawrence River dated 24 June 1762. Prior to Confederation, pilotage and navigational matters in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and on the St. Lawrence River below Montreal were superintended by the Trinity Houses of Montreal and Quebec. Trinity House, Quebec, was chartered in 1805 (Lower Canada Statutes, 4-5 George III, Chapter 2) and Trinity House, Montreal, in 1849 (2 Victoria, Chapter 117), with the demarcation of responsibilities being Portneuf, 38 miles from Quebec City. In 1868 the Corporations continued to exist although the Department approved and audited expenditures. Gradually the Department assumed direct responsibility.
