Collection consists of two albums and four loose photographic prints documenting both the personal life and military career of George Herbert Whyte (1890-1949). One of the albums documents Col. Whyte`s service as commander of the 3rd Division of the Canadian Royal Engineers from 1940 to 1945. This album also includes uniform badges, as well as ephemera including menus from troop ships, and invitation and program for the funeral of the Duke of Connaught (1942), items from a visit to Paris after its liberation, and various press clippings. It also includes photographs of various dignitaries making inspections of the Engineers, including King George VI, in September 1941. The second album includes mostly family friends of G.H. Whyte in Ottawa and surrounding area, before World War One, and photographs of an unidentified train wreck. The loose prints include photographs of unidentified people, including one photograph by Pittaway of Ottawa.

Whyte, G.H. (George Herbert), 1890-1949 : George Herbert Whyte was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, on February 19, 1890. His wife was Annabel Whyte. He worked for the Department of Mines and Resources as a civil engineer from 1908 until 1940, when he was not on active service in the Canadian military. Initially a junior clerk, he rose to the level of Senior Assistant Engineer.

He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1916, as a lieutenant of the 10th Field Company of the 4th Divisional Engineers, and went overseas in August of that year. He was awarded a Military Cross in August, 1917. At the end of World War One, he contracted influenza and spent several weeks in hospital, returning to Canada in March of 1919.

Whyte belonged to the Militia of Canada from 1905 until 1915, and again from 1919 to 1939 in the Duke of Connaught's Own Regiment in Vancouver. In June of 1940, he organized the 2nd Batallion of the DCOR, and in September of 1940 joined the 3rd Division of the Canadian Royal Engineers, where he become Lieutenant-Colonel in command of Headquarters. He rose to the rank of Colonel in 1942.

Col. Whyte retired from the CRE in July of 1945, at the age of 55. He died March 6, 1949.
