Canada. Citizenship and Immigration Canada : The Department of Citizenship and Immigration was created on 4 November 1993. It was part of the Government's restructuring initiative that took place that year. The legislation for the creation of this department, the Department of Citizenship and Immigration Act, was passed on 23 June 1994. This Department represented the integration of the Citizenship Program, which was part of the Department of Multiculturalism and Citizenship, and the Immigration Program, which was part of the Department of Employment and Immigration.

The Department of Citizenship and Immigration is headed by the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, whose powers extend to and include all matters relating to citizenship and immigration. The Department is responsible for administering the Immigration Act and the Citizenship Act, and for developing immigration policy, managing immigration levels, and participating with other federal departments in developing related policy. It assists newly-arrived immigrants to adapt and settle in Canada and helps facilitate and control the admission to Canada of visitors, permanent residents and refugees. It is also responsible for guarding against the entry of persons who may pose a danger to the health and safety of Canadians. Finally, it is responsible for promoting the concept and values of Canadian citizenship to new immigrants and Canadians.

The Department conducts most of its work in its Headquarters office in Ottawa but has offices across Canada and the world. It also has national Case Processing Centres in Vegreville, Alberta and Mississauga, Ontario for immigration cases and in Sydney, Nova Scotia for citizenship cases. The Department administers its programs by cooperating with other federal Departments such as the Department of Foreign Affairs and Industrial Trade. It also has signed several federal-provincial agreements over the past decade which have resulted in new working arrangements in the area of immigration and settlement between the federal and provincial governments.
