The fonds consists of material accumulated by Douglas Patrick in the course of his various careers as a Globe and Mail advertising agent and philatelic columnist, host of CBC Stamp Club, published philatelist and philatelic collector. The majority of the collection relates to Mr. Patrick`s involvement with the CBC Stamp Club from 1944-1971. Series include CBC Scripts and other material, 1944-1971, Correspondence, 1948-1979, Exhibitions, 1948-1972, Manuscript, 1946-1979, Photographs/Slides/Negatives, 1960-1976, Scrapbooks, 1935-1979 and Research Notes, 1931-1980

Patrick, Douglas, 1905-1983 : Douglas Arthur Patrick, son of a dry goods merchant, was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1905. He was married to Mary (nee Powell) in New York at the City Hall in 1929. They had one adopted son Robert. Douglas and Mary Patrick lived in Toronto until 1957 when they moved to Port Credit. Mr. Patrick died there in 1983.

Douglas Patrick learned art and art appreciation in night school and hired a private tutor for English lessons after he completed highschool. He began working in 1929 for a Hamilton drug store as a clerk while also maintaining their window display. He later worked at Woolworth and General Foods, Toronto, as a displayman and salesman. In 1958, Douglas Patrick became an advertising salesman for The Globe and Mail, where he remained for 25 years.

Doug Patrick made a second profession of the hobby he began at the age of ten. He learned stamp collecting from stamp dealer, George Lowe. Mr. Patrick has written philatelic articles for many newspapers; The Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Journal, and the Hamilton Spectator. For thirty three years he wrote a stamp column for The Globe and Mail. In 1950 Mr. Patrick created "The CBC Stamp Club", a weekly stamp show which aired on the Trans Canada Network of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation until 1971. Mr. Patrick wrote more than one thousand scripts for the show and researched the topics for broadcast.

Douglas Patrick was very involved with philatelic activities. He was a member of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada, the Royal Philatelic Society (London), American Philatelic Society, Life Member Jamaica Philatelic Society, Lakeshore Stamp Club, and the Collectors Club of New York. He has also authored ten books which are now considered philatelic standard or reference books.

Custodial history:

All of the records except the audio reels were a gift from Mrs. Douglas Patrick. In 1984 Mary Patrick gave these records to The National Postal Museum (NPM). The material was maintained by the museum until 1988 when it was transferred to the newly established Canadian Postal Archives (CPA). The original official accession number of these items is 1989-565. The audio reels were purchased by NPM in 1984 from Mary Patrick. These tapes were kept at NPM until 1988 and transferred to the CPA. The audio reels were then transferred by CPA to the Cartographic and Audiovisual Archives (CAVA) in 1989.
