It includes 1 mint postage stamp 3 cents Large Queen, 1868 (Scott no. 33) printed on laid paper, among the first stamps issued in the Dominion of Canada, 1 left pane of 100 postage stamps 8 cents Small Queens, 1893, regular issue, printed by the British American Bank Note Co. and 1 postal cover (ca.1867-ca,1871), bearing a label from the American Express Company courier.
The series consists also of philatelic records including textual records (correspondence) given from Lewis L. Reford to some members of the family. It contains 1 file "Aurora Reford" which includes 31 censorship postal covers from the First World War and the Second World War, 2 postal covers from Hitler's enter in Vienna in 1933 and 12 postal covers from 1931 to 1954 (airmail, crash cover, ship, special delivery, etc.); 1 file "Family - W.R. MacInnes, 1939" which contains 2 airmail postal covers and correspondence; 1 file "Gift from Lewis to Michael" which contains 2 first day covers with slogan on the Third International Philatelic Exhibition Station and 2 blocks of United States postage stamps, and 3 postal covers including two "registered";1 file "Gift from Lewis to Michael, Marion and Robert" which includes 12 first day covers on the Royal Visit (May 15 to June 15, 1939) and correspondence; and 1 file "Robert Reford brother of Lewis Reford" which includes 1 letter and 2 blocks of postage stamps of the 2 cents Seal of New Brunswick issued on August 14, 1934.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Reford, Lewis L., 1879-1949 : Dr. Lewis L. Reford was born in Montreal in 1879. He received a private education before going on to McGill University from which he graduated in 1900 with a degree in Arts. In 1904 Reford took a degree in medicine, also from McGill. His postgraduate studies were spent at Johns Hopkins Hospital of Baltimore. In 1911, he was appointed to the surgical staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. Reford died in 1949.
Dr. Lewis L. Reford was a noted philatelist in Canada. In 1916, he began a significant study of the issues of British North America. Ten years later, Reford was considered an authority on Canadian stamps, and in 1925, he was President of the Third Canadian Philatelic Exhibition held in Montreal. In 1939, Reford collaborated with Senator James Calder on Calder's book, Some phases of the Canada '59 issue. Dr. Lewis L. Reford collection was sold by Harmer, Rooke & Co., Inc. of New York in 1950-1951.
