The photographic series was originally compiled from both federal and provincial sources including numerous sub-agencies and survey branches of the Department of the Interior. Photographs were also acquired from private sources and independent photographers from Manitoba and across Canada. The sub-series is organized alpha-numerically as follows.
M-1 series consists of photographs documenting agricultural production, development and reserves in Manitoba. Sources include the Immigration and Colonization Branch and the National Parks Branch of the Department of the Interior. Photos by the International Harvester Company of Canada, Canadian National Railway Company, Experimental Farm, Ottawa, Manitoba Agricultural College at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Minns Studio at Morden, Manitoba, St Nihal Singh, John Woodruff and other sources.

Photos by the Air Board of 1925, and the Royal Canadian Air Force in collaboration with the Surveys Bureau of the Deparmtent of the Interior.Additional name(s):Additional information:General note:Textual references to photography are noted in the Department of the Interior annual reports ca. 1905-1931.Alpha-numeric note:The complete alpha-numeric index to the photographic records of the Deptartment of the Interior is located in FA-021 and in the photo accession file for 1936-271.Custodial history:Sub-series of photographs from photo accession 1936-271 previously acquired and managed by one branch of the Department of the Interior, the Natural Resources Intelligence Branch ca. 1917-1922. In 1922 the name was changed to the Natural Resources Intelligence Service. The branch operated as a central agency with the purpose of classifying and disseminating documentation concerning Canada's natural resources and industry development. This organization was renamed the National Development Bureau in 1929, continuing to maintain and update a comprehensive photograph and lantern slide library containing views of Canada's geography, development and tourism. Upon the closure of the National Development Bureau in 1933, the collections were transferred to other agencies operating within the Department in addition to external federal agencies including the Department of Mines and Resources, Department of Trade and Commerce and the Tourism Board. This sub-series of photographs was transferred to the National Archives in 1936.
