Henry Colton Shumway (1807-1884) was a successful American miniaturist who was born in Connecticut. When he was twenty-one he went to New York and took life drawing classes at the National Academy of Design and it is thought he also studied miniature painting with Thomas Seir Cummings. By 1831 he had established himself as a miniature painter, and was elected as one of the National Academy's earliest members in 1832. He is known to have exhibited his work from 1829 to 1860. Although he visited Washington D.C., New Orleans and spent summers in Connecticut, he primarily worked in New York. He was also a member of the New York State militia, serving as a colonel during the Civil War, and serving as captain for twenty eight years. After 1860 with the decline of the market for miniatures, he coloured daguerreotypes for a living. He is primarily known for miniatures in large rectangular format. Johnson, Dale T.
