Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses : The Permanent International Association of Navigation Congress (PIANC) was organized in 1902 and consists of engineers from around the world who exchange ideas and attempt to solve problems relating to ocean and island navigation. The congress is primarily concerned with waterways, harbour developments, beach erosion, the behaviour of concrete in sea water, the nature of waves and swells, and the design of breakwaters. Canada was a member of the PIANC before the First World War, discontinued its association in 1925 and rejoined sometime in the mid 1950s. In 1973, Canada hosted the congress. The St. Lawrence Seaway Authority has overseen Canada's involvement in the PIANC since 1984.
